Day 35 Athens

Another amazing day!! To see the Acropolis and Parthenon comes a very close second to the Pyramids. We chose a tour which consisted of a guided tour plus some time on our own for looking around the markets. A great choice indeed. We boarded a very plush looking bus, with a guide aptly named Adonis!! A scenic drive around the narrow quaint streets of Athens was lovely. Beautiful old buildings and statues. First stop was at the sight of the first Olympic stadium, amazing. Orange and olive trees lined the streets as we drove up toward the Acropolis. To set eyes on it for the first time was breathtaking. Once again I found it hard to believe I was here. Our guide had given us a commentary cassette, with earphone, which was very helpful as we walked the long, steep climb toward the site. Once there, it was incredible. So much history, I had always remembered this from school, never thought I would actually visit it. There is a lot of restoration work going on. To see the huge marble stones just makes you wonder how on earth this was ever built. It is magnificent.
We left to drive to The Plaka, which is an old market district. We had a lovely lunch and wine in a small café, motorbikes zooming past and dogs lying around. Athens is a beautiful city, and one we would love to visit again.
